Girls Inc. of Long Island

Girls Inc. of Long Island was founded in 2005 as an affiliate of the nationally recognized Girls Inc., a non-profit organization serving only girls with roots dating back to 1894. Girls Inc. responds to the changing needs of girls and their communities through the implementation of research-based programs and advocacy that empower girls to reach their full potential and to understand, value, and assert their rights. Girls Inc. of Long Island founders included a diverse group of women who saw the need to bring gender-specific programs to the girls on Long Island in order to foster equity and hope for the future.

The mission of Girls Incorporated® of Long Island is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. We provide school and community based programming that serves the unique needs of girls, ages 5-18, living in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. In partnership with schools and local organizations, we focus on the development of the whole girl. She learns to value herself, take risks, and discover and develop her inherent strengths. The combination of long-lasting mentoring relationships, a pro-girl environment, and research-based programming equips girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers, and grow up healthy, educated, and independent. Informed by girls and their families, we also advocate for legislation and policies to increase opportunities and rights for all girls. Girls can benefit greatly from the Girls Inc. Experience, which contains six defining elements: girls-only environment, mentoring relationships, intentional programming, research-based curricula, interactive activities, and sustained exposure.
